ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the main concept areas of sound, light and space from age 3–7. It explores some of the themes and contexts available to practitioners when considering how to help children develop their awareness of sounds and light sources in their environments, such as playing with and making musical instruments, or looking at translucent objects on a light box. In the 3–7 age range the exploration of sound in a play context can be achieved through ‘listening walks’, identifying sounds with eyes closed, circle games such as ‘keeper of the keys’, and through using musical instruments such as drums, shakers and scrapers. There is so much potential for developing children’s understanding of sound through music because it is possible to engage children of all ages and levels of attainment, and scope to return to the theme often by focusing on a different aspect of sound or music each time.
