ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the origins and evolution of physical training, Physical Education (PE) and Physical Development (PD) as official terms in provision for young children’s physical activity, health and well-being. It traces the evolution of provision for PD in the Early Years through to its presence as a “prime area” of learning in the Early Years Foundation Stage framework. Evolution implies change, progress and improvement. The aims of PE in public and elementary schools thus differed: In the boys’ public schools, organised games and athleticism developed into a cult of overriding importance in the education which was provided by those schools. PE after the Second World War slowly evolved to include a wider range of activities. PD involves providing opportunities for young children to be active and interactive; and to develop their co-ordination, control, and movement.
