ABSTRACT
This chapter provides the conceptual underpinning of the book and elaborates ‘11 conditions under which assessment supports student learning’, based on a literature review and the participation of members of the Assessment Project Network (some 20 plus UK academics engaged in Higher Education Funding Council for England funded assessment projects). The impact of innovations in assessment in Parts II and III of this book is in part interpreted within this framework with contributions from some members of the Assessment Project Network.
