ABSTRACT

Through considering the purpose and potential of self- and peer assessment (SAP), this chapter illustrates a way forward for the productive incorporation of SAP within higher education. It argues that the value of SAP is in the development of students’ skills and capabilities for present and future tasks. SAP is particularly important for developing critical thinking abilities, and the understanding of standards and how to judge performance (of theirs and others) accordingly, also known as evaluative judgement. While SAP poses potential pitfalls relating to logistics and academic integrity, these can be overcome through a supportive learning culture and technological environment. Thus, SAP is an important feature which can and should be implemented to ensure graduates are prepared for their future beyond university life.
