On the grammar of Spanish qualitative binominal noun phrases

In this chapter I analyzed the syntactic structure and semantic interpretation of Spanish qualitative binominal noun phrases (QBNPs). These clauses can be classified into two types, namely, attributive “un idiota de gobernadora” (an idiot of a governor) and comparative “el idiota del gobernandor” (the idiot of the governor). The proposal developed here is that an unifying account for both constructions is not possible (den Dikken 2006); rather, they display different syntactic structures and semantic interpretations.
