ABSTRACT

This essay is a part of a longer meditation that arises out of Busia’s talks, lectures, and conference presentations, spanning several decades, representing a lifelong attempt to comprehend her own poetry. Why does she write, and why in English? Here, Busia places such understanding in contexts that transcend personal biography: she positions herself amongst a community of late twentieth-century writers who are themselves migrants, exiles, postmodern, and postcolonial subjects—all mislabeled, miscalled, unnamed, and mistaken. All of these, Busia included, find their voices in the multiple languages of their poems, thus discovering a home in language.
