ABSTRACT

Richard Blanco reimagines the ever-shifting bedrock of homeland: cultural, physical, emotional, and intimate. He narrates the physical geography and identity of home as an enigma. Cuba, Spain, Miami, Hartford, Brazil, and Europe: all knit into the fabric of a young, gay boy grappling with the romanticized whiteness portrayed in American television and media. As he ages, his captivation becomes an interrogation into the identity of homeland. Blanco’s reflections are punctuated by an excerpted voice that calls and carries, poetically guarding the emotional and physical traverses of his exile.
