ABSTRACT

In utilizing Shonda Rhimes’ concept of being the First Only Different (F.O.D.), this chapter delves into the precarious position Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) find themselves in attempting to lead institutional change toward addressing diversity, equity, and inclusion. This case offers the perspectives of several authors at various different stages in their academic careers, reflecting on lessons learned that could guide current junior academicians in promoting equitable change in academic institutions.
