ABSTRACT

This empirical chapter explores how the #MeToo movement changed the way Norwegian journalists write about rape. It draws on the theoretical framework of rape myths and how the presence of these myths in the press reinforces false understandings of sexual crime. Through a quantitative content analysis of news articles written before and after the peak of the revitalized #MeToo movement of late 2017, the study shows that there was a slow tendency to decrease the use of rape myths after the global awakening of the social movement. It also uncovers contextual factors related to journalists’ reportage on sexual crime, such as scientific reporting, statistics, and interviews with experts. As a concluding remark, the chapter offers guidelines on how to improve the interviewing process with survivors and how to write about sexual crimes such as rape.
