ABSTRACT

Legislation has a social impact, and the law legally protects some social prejudices that dominant society has about persons with intellectual disabilities in terms of intimate relationships and sexuality. Sexuality can never be separated from the person, nor can it be conceived as a secondary or marginal theme. By providing a theoretical analysis to a practical issue, this chapter will outline the core issues regarding sexuality and the right to have intimate relationships for persons with intellectual disabilities. 'Sexuality is the stamp of adult life'. In the meantime, social barriers through prejudices, stigmas, and stereotypes create unsafe spaces where persons with disabilities are being disciplined in their sexuality as well in their personal relationships. Persons with disabilities have the right to make decisions about their own bodies and intimacy with dignity, freedom, and autonomy. In the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, dignity is mentioned repeatedly.
