ABSTRACT

This part conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the key concepts discussed in the preceding chapters. The part shows that sexuality and intimacy are not just about their bodies or just a biological need. The embedded laws, habits, and symbols, underlie the rules of institutions and the collective consequences of what it means to unquestioningly adjust to these rules and habits is a constant in both stories. Interpersonal relationships between persons with disabilities and their families and service providers influence their daily life experiences. In this regard, families and service providers need to know how to support a person without paternalistic preconceptions. However, their right to decide about their intimacy is prohibited due to the huge impact of legal barriers. There is an archaic way of seeing consent to sex and relationships in Irish law that allows creating an unsafe space for persons with intellectual disabilities.
