ABSTRACT

This chapter considers critical ideas that remain underexplored throughout the series in regard to pregnancy, particularly the quality of healthcare that pregnant women receive behind bars. While Orange is the New Black (OITNB) show focuses on a wide variety of issues facing the incarcerated and their families, it also highlights an area that is rarely discussed in both research and popular culture: the incarceration of pregnant women. Since Maria is a minor character in OITNB, the chapter primarily focuses on Daya and her pregnancy; however, it is worth noting that Maria is the first pregnant inmate viewers meet. With each episode, devising a plan becomes more pressing, as Daya gradually becomes unable to conceal the pregnancy because of her growing "baby bump." Gloria Mendoza, the pseudo-mother to the Latinas in Litchfield, also provides information to Daya regarding the use of home remedies to relieve her pain. The chapter also considers important issues regarding incarcerated pregnant women, primarily their healthcare.
