ABSTRACT

Design and technology is still a relatively new subject and, indeed, was introduced into many schools only in 1990 when it was first included in the National Curriculum. In the 1995 version of the National Curriculum, design and technology was presented in a more straightforward way, with only two attainment targets: Designing and Making. Information and communication technology (ICT) resources for research purposes, responding to design briefs from others, developing design specifications and design proposals that meet them, producing plans that use advanced graphical techniques, including computer aided design (CAD), and producing practical designs for industries for manufacturing in quantity. The actual 'design and make assignment' (DMAs) is to design and make a pop-up card for a specific occasion. The guidance on the design and technology curriculum for pupils with learning difficulties includes eight levels of performance descriptions leading to Level 1 of the National Curriculum.
