ABSTRACT

Geography can be defined as the 'science of the earth's surface, form, physical features, natural and political divisions, climate, productions, population, etc'. The subject-specific guidance for teaching geography to pupils with learning difficulties further supports the inclusion of all pupils. The teaching of geography has been influenced by the round of school inspections by Office for Standards in Education (OFSTED). The formulation of policies and the identification of subject coordinators for geography have resulted in a good deal of positive curriculum development. The inclusion of pupils with profound and multiple learning difficulties (PMLD) in geography teaching is supported by the guidance for teaching geography to pupils with learning difficulties, which contains examples of relevant activities. An important planning decision to be made by schools is what teaching style to use for geography. In some schools, geography is taught as part of an integrated theme, while in others it is a separate subject.
