ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book presents an area pertinent to supervisory practices at both institutions that remains under-discussed in existing literature on graduate research supervision. It focuses on the human dimensions of the supervisor/supervisee relationship. The book highlights strategies for the negotiation of diversity to acknowledge the effect of history, culture, religion and individuality on the supervisor/supervisee relationship. It presents ideas to suggest ways of decoding roles and getting past assumptions or expectations about the role of the supervisor and supervisee in the research process. The book focuses on presenting ideas to encourage developing a supervisee's independence and the supervisor's role in that process. It considers expectations about gradually developing graduate researchers into independent researchers through methods such as modeling appropriate behaviors, providing feedback on seminar presentations and imparting disciplinary knowledge.
