ABSTRACT

A useful starting point for graduate supervisors embarking on the supervision of research students is to dismiss all preconceived notions about research timelines. This chapter offers suggestions for planning post-research activities intended to assist graduate researchers planning to continue in academia. It suggests to guide supervisors and supervisees with the negotiation of issues surrounding research timelines as the chapter discusses supervisors' navigation of four areas—university stipulations, supervisor requirements, student research and post-research projections—which often present challenges for students. The chapter emphasizes the importance of planning research and the necessity of structure to aid research progression. The issue of late or non-completion of research projects by graduate students is not unique to students at regional universities. Schedules are easily derailed where supervisees are willing but simply not equipped to function competently. For the majority, schedules are revised, ignored, overturned or simply affected by a series of individual, relational or academic constraints.
