ABSTRACT

Hyderabad city has completed 423 years of its life. Since its birth it has gifted remarkable personalities to the world of literature, arts and culture who enriched through their intellect, the historical, social and cultural heritage of this city. This chapter mentions the localities that came into existence during the reign of the Qutub Shahis and are considered the oldest localities. Ibrahim Qutub Shah, Quli Qutub Shah, Abdullah Qutub Shah and the last of the dynasty. Abul Hasan Tana Shah created a number of dwellings/localities. This historical survey of localities and their names in Hyderabad has been done with a view to understand how this city has embraced and absorbed the many cultures, religions, beliefs, faiths along with the aspirations of the common man. It also underlines the fact that despite being founded by historical personalities the city remains indebted to the common man who protects and nurtures its shared heritage and its plural culture.
