ABSTRACT

In any language, the place of literary associations is undeniably significant because promotion of a language is possible only through group activity. This is true of Telugu language too which saw a mushrooming of literary organizations from the beginning of the twentieth century. The revolution for knowledge and action through language and literature was initiated in 1901 with the Sri Krishnadevaraya Andhra Bhasha Nilayam. From 1939 to 2011 one can identify 28 literary organizations in Hyderabad, according to Prof. Banna Ilaiah who has worked extensively on this subject. The problems faced by the pre-independent associations were many. They had to face a twofold attack: one from the official language, Urdu; another from Marathi. The emergence of the Telangana statehood movement had its impact on the literary organizations of this area and vice versa. From 2011 onwards organizations have been instrumental in giving Telangana language and literature its due place in the history of Telugu literature.
