ABSTRACT

South India has produced some of eminent Hindi scholars and writers ever since Independence. There have been prominent Hindi poets and prose writers in all the four south Indian states, who have contributed immensely to the development of Hindi literature. Hyderabad has a rich tradition of Hindi literature from the pre-Independence period. A vast majority of Hindi-speaking communities migrated to the city from the north even before Independence and occupied high positions in the Nizam's administration. The proximity of Urdu with Hindi has been one of the reasons for the development of Hindi literature in Hyderabad. Hyderabad has the rare honour of having the first and most prolific feminist Hindi writers in Deepti Khandelwal. There are a number of short story writers in Hyderabad who have made Hindi fiction richer with their creativity. Hyderabad has to its credit some of the satirical writers in Hindi. There has been a commendable list of critics and book reviewers of Hindi in Hyderabad.
