ABSTRACT

In 1909 the Poetry Society was founded in England with this object: 'To promote a more general recognition and appreciation of Poetry by encouraging the public and private reading and use of it and developing the art of speaking verse'. In 1925 when Mrs. Rosenthal was in Hyderabad, with her special gift for literature and in conjunction with Dr. Ethel Pope, a Zenana branch of the Poetry Society was started. From this developed a non-purdah or open centre, now known as 'The Hyderabad Centre'. The 200th meeting, as mentioned earlier, was an evening of music provided by the Hyderabad Madrigals as was also the 215th one. The 233rd meeting in January 1961 was on the use of the English language in India. The Poetry Society makes it a point to have meetings to honour a poet or literary figure whose 25th or 50th anniversary or centenary happens in a particular year.
