ABSTRACT

Tamilians in large numbers migrated to Hyderabad in the Nizam's Dominion in the nineteenth century. Today, Tamil is taught as first language in Keyes High School and Tagore's Home, while it is the medium of instruction in Kachiguda Government High School. Writer Shantha Dutt has translated a number of books from Tamil to Telugu and Telugu to Tamil. The Keyes High School is a hub for Tamil cultural and religious activities. There is Sharada Cultural Organization which is an all women's organization started and managed by a group of enthusiastic ladies to serve and propagate Tamil through religious programmes, music, drama, poetry recitation and literary competitions particularly among young children. There are some more cultural organizations in the city like the South Indian Cultural Association and the Thyagaraja Gana Sabha where Tamil is accorded a significant place. There is a lot of local influence of Telugu and Urdu on Tamil language in Hyderabad.
