ABSTRACT
A library is an indispensable centre of civilized society. Digital libraries are an evolving area of research, development and application and therefore multiple definitions have been offered by workers in this area. A digital library is not confined to a particular location or a so-called building; it is virtually distributed all over the world. Osmania University is one of the premier institutions of higher learning in India. The Osmania University Library was established in 1918 along with the inception of the university. It has a collection of 6,825 manuscripts including those on palm leaves, in Arabic, Hebrew, Kannada, Marathi, Persian, Sanskrit, Tamil, Telugu, and Turkish which cover a variety of subjects. Preservation of digital documents is done in different ways at Osmania University. The rare books which are digitized with the help of the Digital Library of India are placed on the Osmania University website. Digitization is the solution to preserve them and to provide access to the users.
