ABSTRACT
This chapter discusses language change as a legacy of translation. It focuses on translation-induced lexical change, with the aim of presenting a methodology that may contribute to identify the results of such change in the case of English. This methodology will resort to modern digital tools—namely, the third and online edition of the Oxford English Dictionary, widely held as the most authoritative and comprehensive reference on the history of the English lexis. The chapter also focuses on a particular legacy of translation, lexical change in the target language. Despite its predictability, the systematic link between language change and translation has been emphasised only in more research. The framing of English as the object of translation-induced language change may seem surprising these days. The most salient consequence of translation for the English language has been a steady growth in the catalogue of its varieties.
