ABSTRACT

As children move towards the later primary years and beyond, report texts are used increasingly to support lessons across the curriculum. Report is a non-chronologically ordered account which is organized hierarchically according to the demands of a subject or topic. Texts in this genre, written for adults and secondary aged children, open with a general statement about the topic and a description of the phenomenon under study. Electronic texts and software, also organize information in the form of report and when children visit websites where again, report text types dominate. Young children benefit from the chance to talk about the new information and ideas they meet in books and teachers are always on the lookout for texts that are large enough to share with a class or group. In the best geography texts, interesting and relevant illustrations work alongside clear written text to help children to develop the sense of place so important in geography lessons.
