ABSTRACT

A simplified Dewey system is usually the preferred way of organizing non-fiction materials in the primary school library. The library supports learning in every subject, but it is usually the literacy leader who, with the help of colleagues, develops a structured programme of library and research strategies as part of the English policy. The school library is at the heart of all learning, especially literacy learning. From 2017, the School Library Service in Tower Hamlets has given an interschool award to junior library assistants – an excellent way of acknowledging the importance to schools of both their work and the library. As well as a central library, most schools have classroom collections of books and resources. Oral and written presentations are usually for a known audience in primary school and it is wise to keep that audience in mind at the note-taking stage.
