ABSTRACT

Students assembled as they typically did, joking and chatting amiably before sitting down. This chapter argues that exposure to the nearly constant news about local, national, and global violence has an impact on all of us to varying degrees. Just as the big picture security issues provided context, the economic backdrop matters a great deal as educational leaders consider possible turbulent incidents. Middle-income communities face daunting challenges, and even wealthier ones also confront the reality that their children may not have the same quality of life that their parents once had. When it comes to economics, there's plenty of insecurity to go around and that means the potential for heightened turbulence.
