ABSTRACT

The concept of equity has a much different emphasis: there is the term equity, which is not focused as much on the individual and more on the specific group. The society that leans more in the direction of the organism metaphor is one that adjusts to conditions and a variety of individual and group needs as its strategy to succeed. This emphasis places it closer to the concept of equity. The chapter utilizes the phrase oscillating pathway just above because, unlike the stance held in some school textbooks, the road from deep inequality toward equality and equity has not been a steady one. Equality is elusive, and equity between women and men is an abstraction in far too many instances. The determination to fight inequality and a desire to direct our society toward at least some level of equity is apparent.
