ABSTRACT

The Visual Artist and Craft Makers Awards is a programme of small grants schemes run by Creative Scotland in partnership with City Councils to support artists and makers in their creative and professional development. This chapter considers these awards as gifts—and part of a gift economy—the following examples of jewellery artists demonstrate how the programme benefits not just the artists themselves but importantly the wider community. Rosie Kimber secured funds to attend a summer workshop called “Attraction and Repulsion,” run by internationally recognised jewellery artist Marta Mattsson at Idar-Oberstein in Germany. This was an opportunity for her to learn about a different design process as well as to experience another culture and learning environment, and to network with a mix of artists from across Europe. Elizabeth Armour is working part-time as a science communicator at the Dundee Science Centre creating art and design learning resources.
