ABSTRACT

This chapter is a review of studies we conducted in Thailand. As researchers, we applied such theoretical perspectives as socialization theory, mindset theory, achievement goal theory, self-determination theory, and climate theory to study cognitive, affective, and behavioral engagement and cultural aspects in the motivational engagement of high school and college students. Our review highlights cultural context as an important consideration in how “motives” and “competence” that drive student engagement are defined, conceptualized, and measured.
