ABSTRACT

In this talk, James Gee talks about the connection between video games and books. He argues that as we try to understand new media, if we don’t have a correct understanding of old media – namely literacy – we’re going to make the same mistakes we currently make with books. Thus, his talk draws attention to literacy, especially Paulo Freire’s view of literacy. He then demonstrates what the role of digital media and games can be if we accept a good view of literacy. Dr. Gee also offers reasons why video games create better learning conditions than many of today’s schools and suggests how good video games may be used as a learning tool to students.
