ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses options for students' transformation in institutions of higher education. It overviews the history of higher education in order to understand the background and the assumptions that led to the formation and the development of the institutions. The chapter describes that different models, which show the ways in which institutions of higher education can affect the students' transformation. It explains with recommendations for academic and administrative staff in order to create an environment which encourages student transformation and student success in spite of scarce resources. The chapter stresses that the importance of teaching in a meaningful way which allows the creation of spaces for students' transformation and encourages the process. The Dilemma-Based Model is a six-steps model, which involves the participants simultaneously in autonomous learning and in discussing competing values. The students face complex challenges, and during the process they realize that the knowledge they acquire is not enough to help find easy solutions.
