ABSTRACT

This part introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters. The part explores the role of higher education within conflict societies. It looks the classroom environment, unpacking how authorities of 'knowledge' and 'truth' are negotiated, and the role of critical self-knowledge in fostering learning, where there are competing and contested claims to 'truth'. The part also looks at the power dynamics that surround how educational content is selected. It discusses the opposing perspectives on education, including its role in building community and contributing to cohesion in society, alongside how it might further divide communities by reinforcing cohesion within certain groups to the exclusion of others. The part describes the themes of censorship, dialogue and trust within narrative and storytelling. The continued Occupation raises significant philosophical and practical challenges for Israeli higher education institutions.
