ABSTRACT
In May 2010, the incoming Chief Secretary to the UK Treasury (deputy finance minister) in David Cameron’s new Conservative government found the shortest of notes from his Labour Party predecessor, Liam Byrne. The note read: “Dear Chief Secretary, I’m afraid there is no money.”
