ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the reflective practice movement against the background of accountability in education and the socio-political landscape. It focuses on how Foundation Degree studies have developed professional and academic learning to support children and young people in schools. The chapter develops professional and academic learning and career progression, including routes into teaching. In particular, most support members of staff in support roles are teaching assistants, who can often progress as higher level teaching assistants. There are also other support roles in areas such as: administration, counselling, cover supervision, data and examinations, finance, human resources, library and resources, pastoral care, mentoring, and technical support. Teaching is a demanding, but very rewarding career. It is no wonder that so many inspirational and complimentary comments have been made about teaching.
