ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the neurobiological effects of psychological trauma. Trauma is defined and the biological stress response system is explained. Different parts of the brain are detailed in an easy to understand way. It is critical that art educators understand the impact that trauma has on a child’s developing brain. Once educators recognize the benefits of art education for children who have experienced trauma, they can develop teaching strategies to help these children. Ten teaching tips for art educators are included in this chapter.
