ABSTRACT

Many juvenile offenders have been exposed to numerous events resulting in psychological trauma; some have mental health issues, and others experience post-traumatic/stress disorder. This can result in increased challenges for meeting their academic needs. Research reveals that while art programs for youth who are incarcerated are scarce, many have the potential to engage youth in meaningful learning. This chapter reveals statistics on youth incarceration and provides research on art programs in juvenile correctional facilities. The authors contend that social, emotional, and behavioral issues should be considered in designing and implementing appropriate and meaningful curricula for students who are incarcerated. For safety reasons, the art teacher must always be aware of potential danger to the student, other students, and staff. This chapter provides educators with information on types of detention and programs for youth in the juvenile incarceration system, followed by sample instructional ideas and teaching tips.
