ABSTRACT

Juvenile offenders who are incarcerated in correctional or prison facilities are entitled to a Free and Appropriate Public Education. This education is generally in the form of General Education Development, General Education Diploma, or Commonwealth Secondary Diploma. Art is not a required course for these programs and is not even necessarily offered. This chapter presents various art programs offered in some correctional institutions. A recreational model included presents examples in which art is a way to deal with time and express oneself through art-making as a natural human impulse. These various art programs can become a means to survive, hope, and dream.
