ABSTRACT

How can teachers transform students’ negative attitudes and behavior in class to create a place where students cannot wait to return? One master teacher shares strategies and beliefs that contribute to enjoyable, meaningful teaching and learning, and create a space for students of all abilities to experience academic success. Understanding psychological trauma and knowing students is essential, as is recognizing/celebrating student success through public displays. Keys to success include establishing positive rapport, consistent routines, classroom organization, and providing positive feedback. The author also suggests teachers model enthusiasm for learning, embrace the joy of teaching, and create student-directed lessons, providing choices in the learning process to empower and encourage students of all abilities to work creatively.
