ABSTRACT

This chapter explores child abuse by giving an overview of the problem, then discussing the identification of abuse or neglect, its impact on the education of children, and the role of the art teacher. All teachers are mandatory reporters of child abuse and neglect, and this chapter discusses the complexity in reporting. The role of the art educator, as part of the school team, is vital in detecting if a child may be being abused. Art teachers are in a good position to look for indirect signs of abuse. Examples are given of how a child may reveal those signs through their art work. Suggestions are given for establishing a positive and supportive relationship that would benefit all students and which is essential for working with students who are experiencing psychological trauma. Professionalism and ethical behavior is stressed; as the legal process proceeds, protecting the child is a priority, and maintaining confidentiality is of utmost importance.
