ABSTRACT
In this chapter readers will understand the importance of the skills involved in interpreting and familiarize themselves with the receptive skills and competencies involved in healthcare interpreting. This chapter focuses on the receptive skills for interpreting (command of both languages, active listening, text/discourse analysis) and allows readers to reflect on the skills and competencies involved in interpreting in general and, in healthcare interpreting, in particular. Readers will also become familiar with acquiring, developing and self-assessing the necessary knowledge and skills to become a healthcare interpreter.
