ABSTRACT

Technical terms are lexical items that represent concepts of a domain and play an essential role in specialized communication. As ensuring that relevant terms are used carefully and consistently is critical but also challenging in specialized communication and particularly in translation, terminology management has long been an important part of translation workflows.

A range of technologies for processing terminology have been developed, some within the context of translation and others independently. In this chapter, we give an overview of several approaches and tools that can contribute to facilitating and accelerating the identification, description, consultation and reuse of terminology in a translation context. We first introduce term extraction technologies developed in the field of natural language processing (NLP), and clarify issues related to these technologies from the point of view of translation practice. We then discuss various functions and features of terminology management systems (TMSs), before describing how these systems can be implemented in and affect the translation workflow. We wrap up with a brief discussion of the emerging issues of quality control in terminology management and the relationship between terminology management and machine translation (MT).
