ABSTRACT

The concluding chapter discusses the evolution of vocational education and training in four Nordic countries (Finland, Norway, Denmark and Sweden) over an extended period of time (1850–2015). The chapter draws in an eclectic way on a number of different theoretical perspectives and as well as questions raised by empirical observations, summarizes main findings, and explores continuities and coalitions in the formation of national VET systems. The analysis provides insights in the differences between the country specific trajectories but also explores the possibility of a Nordic model in VET. The results speak to the comparative literature on vocational training/skill formation systems as well as debates on issues of institutional change.
