ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces the use of concept-mapping techniques as tools to visualize and organize group knowledge generation and knowledge preservation in diverse online learning environments. Concept maps can be introduced in stages: generating a concept map as an individual task; synthesizing socioconstruction of knowledge from online discussions as a team effort; and collaboratively solving problems as a team effort. Concept maps are knowledge representation tools, rooted in constructivist learning theory which spatially represents ideas, processes and interrelationships. Researchers have been advocating for the development of concept-mapping software as a tool to enhance collaborative learning in web-based learning scenarios. Concept maps allow learners from different cultural backgrounds—and with different instructional needs and learning styles—to contribute concepts, resources or ideas to solve team problems. The WisCom framework supports culturally inclusive learning environments through the use of diverse learning strategies and techniques that are suited for different learning styles and needs.
