ABSTRACT

Single-Case Experimental Designs (SCEDs) are robust tools of scientific inquiry and confer many advantages to the practice-based researcher relative to other designs. Despite their benefits they are underused. The purpose of this chapter, consequently, is to stimulate greater use of these designs among practice-based researchers. This is primarily accomplished by reviewing the advantages of SCEDs for practice-based research and refuting common myths associated with these designs. The ability of SCEDs to protect against internal and external validity threats is particularly emphasized. The chapter’s goal is also pursed through an introduction to the key features of these designs and a review of their application with traditional psychotherapy patients in the published literature.
