ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on delivering effective group presentations, one important component of providing sport psychology programmes to teams of young athletes. It begins with an examination of why group sessions are important. The research on group interventions is then summarised. Factors to consider when delivering educational programmes are discussed and include establishing one’s philosophy of working with young athletes, clarifying one’s purpose, considering the audience, understanding each presentation context, the use of visual aids, the use of language, metaphors, and examples, and employing spice or attention grabbers to maintain interest. Issues that practitioners might encounter when presenting to groups of young athletes are discussed and include recognising that it is normal that some participants will not be interested, determining whether and when parents and coaches should be involved, and dealing with disruptive participants. The chapter concludes by reviewing key developmental and generation cohort considerations when delivering group sessions.
