ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a brief introduction to social entrepreneurship and positions it in relation to social enterprise. It demonstrates its present relevance in Denmark through five current platforms for social entrepreneurship, and shows how these are influenced both by international trends and the roots of the Danish experimental tradition. Social entrepreneurship is defined as the creation of social value through innovation with a high degree of participation, often involving civil society and often of economic importance. The chapter considers how people should understand the expectations and the notable initiatives in social entrepreneurship and social enterprises that they have seen unfold in Denmark. It concludes with a discussion of how social entrepreneurship appeals to fundamentally different strategies for the future of modern welfare society, pointing to how these potentials and expectations seem to be pushing and pulling the articulation of social enterprise from all sides.
