ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a range of Portuguese as an Additional Language (PAL) programs. It introduces the Portuguese as an Additional Language Center (PALC) at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) and discusses how a growing demand for Portuguese language skills, particularly in Asia and Latin America, has allowed it to develop into hub for an international PAL teacher education network. The chapter describes an in-service teacher education program for primary and secondary teachers from multilingual African countries where Portuguese is the official language, and discusses the specific challenges and outcomes of offering this program to teachers from Cape Verde. A development in PAL education encompasses both language teaching and teacher education at the same time. The chapter also describes an in-service teacher education program that involved both these dimensions. The Language of Letters and Numbers Program was a bold in-service teacher education program for public school teachers from multilingual African countries where Portuguese is an official language.
