ABSTRACT

Analyses based on Big Data are receiving an ever-increasing amount of attention in various domains. The Internet has increased overall availability of data, such as user-generated content. New data sources and computer-intensive methods enable the study of complex phenomena such as global social networks 'in ways never before imagined or possible'. The algorithms utilised in computing Big Data have entered various everyday contexts and are an important dimension of the digitisation of everyday spaces in which we all live and work. This chapter points out what can be summarised under the term, and evaluates the potential contribution of Big Data to a culture analysis of digitisation. It demonstrates how to highlight and make visible the influence Big Data is having on the everyday practices and meanings of actors in various digitised spaces. The focus is on capturing everyday life situations in digitised spaces which are of interest to cultural anthropologists or researchers from neighbouring disciplines engaged in culture analysis.
