ABSTRACT

It’s Saturday at the Old Biscuit Mill, and this Saturday—like every Saturday—it is packed to breaking point, standing room only. The Old Biscuit Mill is an old red factory, revamped and gentrified, that promotes itself as ‘a vibrant, warm-hearted little village in the heart of Woodstock where talented people come together to share, collaborate and well, … show off their heart-felt passion’ (Homepage, 25 November 2015). It is best known for its weekly Saturday market, and has recently been remapped as part of the Cape Town must-see destinations (TripAdvisor). It is a ‘transnational village’ in the sense of Cabral and Martin-Jones (this volume).
