ABSTRACT

The television ghost story can thus be found in the single play, the anthology drama, the serial, and the series, with each emphasizing different aspects of the ghost story and presenting its own challenges and appeals. Like the ghosts of literature and folklore, the television ghost is multifaceted, a conveyor of multiple meanings depending on both intent and on reception. It emphasizes that the viewer cannot trust their eyes, whether that viewer is the haunted individual on the screen or the person gazing at the screen. At the same time as dealing with the changing technologies of television, the ghost story also has to contend with the shifting frameworks of regulation, censorship, and taste. As with most popular genres, the television ghost story has appeared in each of the main narrative fiction formats of the medium across the years.
